Why Are Work Boots So Incredibly Important For Mechanics?

Mechanics always work in different environments, which are often greasy and dirty because of the lubed car parts that they work with, and the poor ventilation. They are also exposed to really noisy surroundings due to the nature of the tools used to repair machines.

Nonetheless, dirty and noisy is not what describes better a mechanic. It is the work ethic and, sadly, the risks that having a job as this brings. It is expected that prevention must take place. Why is prevention so necessary? Because you just can’t expect to perform better at your work if you are afraid that something could happen to you.

How can you prevent accidents from happening when working in these types of environments? Well, the use of the appropriate work gear is very important. And an imperative part of it is the correct use of work boots at all times, even in the friendliest of places. A mechanic doesn’t know when a heavy piece of machinery can fall into his or her foot.

Work boots are designed to minimize injuries due to falls, slips, and many other types of accidents. They vary in features for different needs, and there are institutions responsible for ensuring that certain standards are met. A few of these institutions are:

  • CSA and ISA in Canada.
  • ISA in Europe.
  • ASTM or ANSI in the United States.

They all have similar requirements for all work boot brands. The goal of these institutions is to provide the workers, in this case, mechanics, with work boots that are built to protect their feet even in the most dangerous of work environments.

There are five main key elements that mechanics should look for in a pair of work boots. If you fall into this group, then you should make a checklist of the following features to use when buying your next footwear. At least 4 of the following must be present on the boots you are looking at.

The first foundational requirement for all work boots chosen by mechanics is the protection provided to one special part of the feet, the toes. The toes are not only important for stability but also are one of the most delicate parts of your whole body. This protection mentioned is accomplished by the use of safety toes that meet the criteria established by the institutions previously mentioned. There are three main types of safety toes:

  • Steel Toes
  • Aluminum Toes
  • Composite Toes

The second essential feature that a work boot used by a mechanic should have is the cushion insole and outsole that must keep the feet safe from most falling objects.

The rest of the characteristics recommended for feet protection are:

  • Rubber outsoles for slip, abrasion, and oil resistance.
  • Waterproofing material used in the construction of the boot.
  • Dispersion of electrical hazards.

These safety features are normally identified with color-coded symbols, so they are visible to anyone interested in them by just giving a glance.

  1. I have a question, what brands of boots would be best for my husband? My husband wears his work boots 24/7, he doesn’t wear any other shoes. EVER! He goes through a pair of boots in just under 3 months, spending over $300.00 a year on just boots. I want to buy him a pair of boots that will be comfortable for him to wear, take the abuse from him work 10+ hr shifts on his feet and not fall apart. He’s the foundation for our family and deserves a pair of shoes that won’t quit on him.
