Must-Have Features of the Best 6 Inch Work Boots

There are features I think should be present in all 6 inch work boots, at least the best ones. Let me share them with you.

6 inch work boots

Safety Toe Caps

Safety toe caps are essential to provide an additional layer of protection to the toes. This is essential to let workers do their jobs with the confidence that their toes won’t get squashed by heavy falling tools.

There’re various types of safety toe caps, you’ve got:

  • Steel toe caps: these might be the heaviest option, but they offer the most complete protection
  • Composite toe caps: these are nonmetallic which is great for workers that work near live wires
  • Aluminum toe caps: they are as protective as steel toe caps and lighter. However, they’re a bit pricy, so take that in mind

Whatever safety toe cap you choose is going to be fine I believe, as they’re very protective. Nevertheless, consulting with your employer if he recommends a certain type of safety toe cap might be a good decision for you.

Slip Resistant Outsoles

The outsoles are an important part of any pair of work boots. I mean, they are the ones that will provide (or not) enough traction to allow workers to walk confidently on slippery surfaces without the fear of slipping and falling on hard surfaces.

This is why I’d say the best work boots should have slip and oil resistant outsoles as these will provide these workers a nice level of traction granting them the chance to work with a high level of confidence.

Waterproofing & Insulation (Optional)

The level of waterproofing and insulation a pair of 6 inch work boots has will determine whether your feet will remain dry and warm when exposed to adverse external conditions.

The thing with waterproofing membranes and insulation is that they not only add to the price of the boots but also make them bulkier and heavier.

This is why I’d recommend workers to get properly insulated and waterproofed work boots only if they will be exposed to low temperatures or exterior liquids. If that’s your case, then you’ll definitely want a nice pair of 6 inch insulated and waterproofed work boots that’ll keep your feet dry and warm at all times.

Otherwise, you’ll be spending 50% more money on work boots with added features you don’t really need.

Shock Absorbing Midsoles & Cushioned Footbeds

It’s important to think that you won’t only need to be protected, but also comfortable while at your job. This is why I also advise workers to do additional research regarding the comfort features of their next pair of 6 inch work boots.

The first step, I might add, is to get a pair of work boots with cushioned footbeds and shock-absorbing midsoles.

The reasoning behind this recommendation is that both of these features work together to provide the feet the support and shock absorption necessary to make working all day on their feet something more bearable.

Reliable Construction

Nowadays, 6 inch work boots aren’t the most reliable investment you could do.

Sadly, there’re a lot of brands that manufacture their work boots without using the best materials available and they do it by following lousy construction methods with the sole purpose of saving on costs. It’s how it is.

This is why I believe your next 6 inch work boots should be manufactured with top-quality materials and using reliable construction methods such as the Goodyear Welt construction. That way, you’ll make sure that your next safety boots will last you for at least a few years.

Frequently Asked Questions

These are the most frequent questions asked about the best 6 inch work boots followed by my attempts to answer most of them.

What are 6 inch work boots good for?

Well, like many other work boots, 6 inch work boots are very protective as (at least most of them) come with essential protective features, such as:

  • Steel toe caps
  • Slip-resistant outsoles
  • Waterproofing and insulation

But, to be more specific, what makes 6 inch work boots stand apart from other safety boots (i.e. 8-inch work boots) is their form factor.

6 inch work boots have, well, 6-inch shafts. This makes them substantially more comfortable than other taller work boots.

Due to this, they feel lighter and less bulky which is essential for workers that want to prioritize comfort without sacrificing the vital protection a safety boot brings to the table.

Are 6 or 8 inch work boots better?

Well, the answer to this question will highly depend on the reader’s needs.

Are you frequently exposed to serious and extreme risks? Do you work with abrasive chemicals?

If that’s your case, I believe the best option for you are 8-inch work boots as they cover more skin providing a slightly better protection. Mind you’ll have to pay a bit more and they’ll be considerably bulkier than work boots with shorter shafts.

Now, if you’re a regular worker who needs a respectable level of protection from their safety boots and doesn’t want to carry around heavy boots all day long, then I think 6 inch work boots are your best bet.

These branch of work boots are still very protective as they come with safety toe caps, slip-resistant outsoles, and abrasive resistant materials (at least a big portion of them). All of them are attributes that offer a serious level of protection.

Additionally, they have the added benefit of having 6 inch shafts which cover enough of the ankle to be both very protective and comfortable enough.

Can I use 6 inch work boots at a construction site?

You most definitely can!

As previously explained, 6 inch work boots stand as a great option of safety footwear that is both very comfortable (due to their shorter shafts) and still protective enough.

At a construction site, one is accustomed to dealing with serious risks such as heavy tools falling in the wrong place at the wrong time, liquids getting spilled, etc…

Due to this, 6 inch work boots (at least the ones I’ve reviewed) could save many workers from getting seriously injured at the construction sites where they work as they come with solid protective features such as:

  • Steel toe caps
  • Slip and oil-resistant outsoles
  • Abrasion-resistant leather
  • etc…

What safety toe caps are better for 6 inch work boots?

Well, this is a tough one to answer.

Different safety toe caps have different advantages and disadvantages. It’ll be up to you and your employer to decide what safety toe cap is best for your 6 inch work boots. Hell, you might end up deciding to go for soft-toe work boots!

To save you the hassle and indecision, here is a quick guide that’ll help you decide what safety toe cap is best for you:

  • Steel toe caps: These are by far the ones that offer the most impact resistance as their main material is steel. However, they’re known to be bulky and a bit heavy
  • Composite toe caps: These are nonmetallic, making them perfect for workers that suffer the risk of electrocution. They offer a good level of protection (yet not the same level that steel toe caps offer)
  • Aluminum toe caps: These safety toe caps offer the same level of protection as steel toe caps do yet they’re lighter! The bad news is that they tend to be a bit pricier and there aren’t many work boots that use them

Again, it’ll be up to you to decide. However, what I can tell you is that, regardless of what you choose, most safety toe caps provide enough protection for the needs of most tradesmen and workers.

How do I take care of 6 inch work boots?

The process of maintaining a pair of 6 inch work boots is pretty simple, you just have to follow these steps:

  1. Brush the dust off the boots
  2. Clean the work boots with saddle soap
  3. Wipe them down with a clean cloth
  4. Apply a light layer of leather conditioner and let it nourish the leather for about 15 minutes
  5. Wipe the boots again with a clean cloth and try to remove excess leather conditioner
  6. Buff the boots with a brush
  7. Done!
