EMTs and paramedics are used to dealing with lots of risks regarding their footwear, such as:

  • standing on their feet for long hours with little to no rest
  • walking on slippery surfaces covered with all kinds of stuff (i.e. glass, blood, oil, etc)
  • having the toes exposed to getting crushed by heavy objects falling in the wrong place at the wrong time
  • suffering the cold and high temperatures when assisting patients outdoors

Due to this, only a few boots would really help a paramedic be comfortable and protected when at work.

The good news for you is that I decided to research and test dozens of EMS boots to arrive at a comprehensive list of the best ones for EMTs and paramedics. I hope it helps!

Features of The Best Work Boots For Paramedics

EMTs and paramedics work subjected to tough conditions that demand certain types of footwear.

Hopefully, in this next part of the article, you’ll find a few attributes I think are essential in the best work boots for paramedics.

Cushioned Footbeds & Shock Absorbing Midsoles

As I told you previously, paramedics face a tough line of work. They sometimes have to work in inhospitable places making tough decisions on the spot. In that context, the last thing they want is having to deal with foot pain.

This is why the best EMS work boots must have cushioned footbeds and shock-absorbing midsoles that will support their feet and make the pressure that walking very easy.

That way, they won’t have to deal with unbearable foot pain at the end of their long work shifts.

Side-Zippers

The best EMS work boots for paramedics must-have features that will allow them to work adopting any position as they usually work in tricky places. That said, I’d recommend they looking for flexible features that won’t constrict their movements in any way.

A perfect example of this is side zippers that guarantee a custom fit throughout the whole day and make it very easy to put on and take off the boots.

Astm Standards & Required Tests

There are many regulations that EMS boots for paramedics must comply with.

For instance, the OSHA requires that all employers must provide their workers with safe footwear. This is why many work boot manufacturers aim to surpass the ASTM (American Society of Testing and Materials) standards.

These work boots must surpass two types of tests, an impact test, and a compression test.

In the impact test, the EMS work boots must meet either the number 50 or 75 which is measured by dropping weight onto them.

Then, in the compression test, the EMS work boots must surpass a test in which a specified number of pounds is applied onto the safety toes which could crush or break them.

Knowing this, I’d say getting boots that surpass the ASTM standards would be a good idea for paramedics.

Safety Toe Caps (Optional)

As previously discussed, paramedics have to face many risks as they work in often hostile places where accidents happen.

Due to this, I’d recommend paramedics used to facing these risks to look for EMS boots with safety toe caps that will act as hard barriers that will isolate their toes from getting crushed by falling objects.

Slip-resistant Outsoles

The worst thing that could happen to a paramedic is working outdoors, in a crappy area, with unsafe EMS boots.

To prevent this, the best EMS work boots must have reliable non-slippery outsoles that will provide traction on slippery or bumpy surfaces where paramedics might have to work.

Good Quality Materials & Reliable Construction Methods

As many of us know, work boots are very expensive and salaries (especially for health workers) are not that high. This is why these EMS work boots must be durable, so paramedics can work knowing their footwear won’t get destroyed after a couple of months!

This is why I’d recommend paramedics to get boots manufactured with good quality materials (i.e. top quality leather) & reliable construction methods as these will endure well under rough outdoor conditions, guaranteeing paramedics a long durability.

This, in turn, will allow them to work in peace and focus on the job at hand.

Benefits of The Best EMS Work Boots For Paramedics

These are some of the benefits I find about getting the best work boots for paramedics.

Freedom of Distractions

Paramedics have to perform at their best, always. I mean, they have the lives of the patients on their hands. This is why they must have their minds free from any of what I call ”unproductive distractions”.

Luckily, if you get the right pair of EMS work boots for paramedics that’s what you’ll get… freedom.

You’ll feel free from the worries that come with your job as you’ll know that your feet will be both protected and comfortable all the time.

Safe Adaptability

Paramedics do their jobs in tough environments as accidents don’t happen in carefully selected places.

Hopefully, the best EMS work boots gather specific attributes, such as slip-resistant outsoles and safety toe caps, that let these professionals do their work on almost any surface and in contact with dangerous substances.

Endurance

Painful and long work shifts are very usual for paramedics. Sadly, they put high pressure on their feet and joints leading them to long term pains (i.e. plantar fasciitis)

Therefore, the best EMS boots for paramedics must be manufactured with the best materials and construction methods which will allow the footwear to endure being exposed to tough conditions.

Total Protection

As you’ll know, EMTs and paramedics face too many risks as part of their jobs. They have to work in inhospitable places doing complex work while in constant contact with hazardous substances.

That’s why I chose those EMS work boots that provide top protection which allows them to focus their attention on the task at hand and avoid making mistakes.

How Did I Test The Work Boots

Best Ems Work Boots For Paramedics How Did I Test The Work Boots

I performed specific tests on the boots and chose which of them performed the best for the needs of a paramedic.

So, for those who are curious, these are the tests I performed.

Comfort Test

As previously considered, paramedics have to usually work in hostile places as accidents usually happen on those.

To recreate these bumpy surfaces I purposely walked on slippery, rough, and muddy terrains to test whether the boost gave me traction to work in peace and achieve my best performance.

Protective Test

EMS boots must have protective features that will give EMTs and paramedics the guarantee their feet will be protected at all times.

So, to test this I would drop heavy objects from safe heights to the toe box area of the boots to test their protective attributes.

Also, I would purposely walk on slippery surfaces to see whether a given boot would provide me with the necessary traction to not fall and injure myself.

Durability Test

To test the durability of the boots, I would use each pair for at least 4 months walking on inhospitable surfaces and giving them a huge beating.

I then would analyze their structure to see how well their shape was.

Frequently Asked Questions

These are the most frequent questions asked about the best boots for paramedics and my corresponding attempt to answer them.

What are paramedic boots good for?

Well, I’d say the best boots for paramedics are known for having:

  • Safety features (i.e. slip-resistant outsoles) that make sure no EMTs or paramedics suffer serious injuries
  • Really comfortable features, such as cushioned footbeds, to make sure they don’t have to deal with joint and foot pains at the end of their workdays

What safety toe caps are better for EMT/paramedic work boots?

For most paramedics who are not exposed to serious threats, I’d say the best option would be to get tactical boots without safety toe caps as they’d end up making the boots bulkier and heavier.

However, for those paramedics who want to be extra protected and who don’t mind the added weight, then getting work boots with safety toe caps might be their best bet.

To give you an idea, there are different choices to choose from. You’ve got:

  • Steel toe caps: a bit heavy, but the most protective
  • Composite toe caps: a bit lighter, and non-conductive of electricity nor heat
  • Aluminum toe caps: the lightest option, but the most expensive one too

I believe any of these toe caps might be OK. They’ve got their advantages and disadvantages, but they all offer a serious level of added protection.

How do I maintain paramedic work boots?

Well, this might sound weird, but maintaining a pair of leather boots for paramedics is very easy.

You just have to follow this guide:

  1. Brush off the dirt from the boots
  2. Wash the boots with saddle soap and a clean cloth
  3. Apply a thin layer of leather conditioner and let it nourish the leather for about 30 minutes
  4. Remove the excess conditioner with a clean cloth or towel
  5. Buff the boots with a brush
  6. Done!
