How Did I Test The Best Work Boots For Truck Drivers

Best Work Boots For Truck Drivers How Did I Test The Best Work Boots for Truck Drivers

Many people are interested in how we choose work boots. So, for those interested in how we review the best work boots for truck drivers, here’s the process…

Comfort Test

Truck drivers are used to both sitting down all day or climbing up and down the cabin when they reach certain locations which put tremendous stress on their feet and joints.

What I did was testing the boots’ ergonomics after months of driving the truck in long hauls to see whether the boots being tested were up to the part in dealing with these issues.

Protection Test

Also, given that truck drivers have to move around heavy boxes, they will be exposed to injuries which is why I made sure to drop some of these from safe distances to the toe box are to see whether the box had enough protective features to safeguard my toes from any injury.

Safety regulations are usually imposed on truck drivers at the risk of getting fined if they don’t respect them. That’s why I made sure to see if the boots I tested had the “usual” regulations (safety toes, non-slippery outsoles, etc..)

Durability Test

Given that I, as a truck driver, have to move around many locations and do very different things depending on the task at hand. In fact, I have to be exposed to extreme changes in weathers which were a test in itself on the durability features of the boots.

If the boots remained in an “as new” condition after months of having put them on these tough weather changes that’s when I deemed these boots as “durable”.

Must-Have Features For The Best Work Boots For Truck Drivers

Best Work Boots For Truck Drivers Must Have Features for The Best Work Boots for Truck Drivers

Comfort Attributes

Cushioned Footbeds And Shock Absorbing Midsoles

Truck drivers are used to spending all day long for weeks at a time only seating down and driving. This sedentary position generates stress in a specific part of the body that needs casual movement to let the blood flow. Thus, truck drivers end up with deep back, knees and feet pain.

Moreover, us truck drivers we are used to constantly climb up and down the cabin which means that we have to put the pressure of all our weight on feet and knees and if we don’t have a good pair of work boots, things could get rough.

Finally, we have to deal with heavy cargos pretty frequently, picking up and dropping off heavy boxes and dealing with lots of weights by using only our bodies which ends up bringing pains that are really difficult to deal with while driving all day long.

Because all of these reasons is why I’m used to recommending work boots with cushioned footbeds and shock absorbing midsoles as they are going to ergonomically support the feet, avoid pains and bring the energy back to the truck driver.

I mean, there is nothing more “regenerating” that feeling how your feet, knee, and back pain fades away to never come back!

Protective Attributes

Slip Resistant Outsoles

There is nothing worse than getting injured while working, right?

Well, truck drivers are exposed to many injury risks as they are constantly driving to different locations with different weathers and surfaces and they have to pick up and drop off boxes, talk to different people, etc..

This means that these workers are exposed to walking to a wide range of surfaces that could both be safe or really, really slippery.

Safety Toes

Given that truck drivers have to deal with heavy loads, there is a big risk for these boxes to fall straight into their feet which means that having features such as a steel safety toes could save their butt as they will maintain the toes isolated from an exterior force.

I mean, there’s nothing worse than getting your toes crushed while still having to drive for the rest of the day, so, take this feature really seriously, please.

Regulations

Many trucking companies establish as regulation to truck drivers to wear safety work boots at the expense of a potential fine if they don’t do it.

This is why I often recommend checking with your employer before pulling the trigger so you avoid any headaches!

Durability Attributes

Quality Materials And Construction Methods

Given that truck drivers have to move around a lot and visit different places with different weathers and conditions the boots they use are exposed to getting wrecked by the sudden changes of scenery which is why I recommend getting boots with proven quality materials and construction methods (like the Goodyear Welt construction) which will give the trucker the guarantee that they won’t have to spend more money in a few months to replace the boots!

Features For Different Truck Driver Categories

Ice Road Truckers

Given that these truckers will be exposed to low temperatures, they should get insulated work boots that will keep their feet warm and dry. Moreover, getting work boots with oil and slip resistant outsoles should be good as there are many surfaces that become slippery when it’s snowing.

Hazmat Hauling & Tanker Drivers

When Hazmat Hauling, given that truckers must handle chemicals which could be dangerous for your health, using abrasive resistant work boots might be a great idea. In this way, if a spill occurs you have the guarantee that you’re gonna be safe.

LTL Freight

Given that an LTL is hauled for short distances, there are specific attributes that truckers should take into consideration.

For instance, given that the distances are short and given the frequency in that the driver will have to climb up and down the booth, he should get boots with lightweight and ergonomic features so they could adapt to the shape of the feet without producing any pains.

Local Drivers

These drivers have the most “generic” needs, so just by reading this article and following the advice, they’re gonna be good.

  1. Because I need a size 13 in work boots. I have personal issues with using them while driving a semi. First is comfortably. When I’m driving long distance. Its comfortable to put the semi in cruise control and let my feet relax. This is hard to do with bulky boots. Next, the wait of the boots puts more pressure on my feet and in turn affects other parts of the body. Example: legs and back. Last,if your used to shoe ware when walking and driving. With my foot dimensions, safety is impaired, I tend to hit the brake and acceleration at the same time because boots are larger. I’m more worried about tripping over myself while stepping around on the cat walk for example. They feel like the size of clown shoes because of my foot size. I do not handle freight. I only do drop and hooks. Please reply.

  2. Great information Ken! I am a EHS professional and specialize in logistics and drove for twenty years. I’m in the dairy buisness and am always on the look out for information regarding keeping my guys safe. We have location all over the country and our drivers work in a myriad of environmental conditions and work levels. The guys are always looking for a ideal boot and I try and help. Lately in the warmer clims guys have been making an argument for a boot that has less than a 6″ upper which has always been my recommendation to protect their ankles. Curious about your take as there is very little data to support my decision.
