There are many problems related to finding the best work boots for plantar fasciitis. To name a few, most current work boots:

  • don’t offer the necessary shock absorption or feet support needed to fight the consequences of plantar fasciitis
  • are manufactured with low-quality materials which is the main reason why they break after a few months of regular use
  • tend to be bulky and heavy

This article is my humble attempt to help workers suffering from plantar fasciitis find a proper pair of work boots.

10 Best Work Boots For Plantar Fasciitis

After extensive research I selected the following 10 work boots as the best for people suffering from plantar fasciitis:

1. Timberland Pro Pit Boss Work Boots for Plantar Fasciitis

Features

  • Footbeds: Open-cell PU footbeds with antimicrobial treatment
  • Safety toes: Steel safety toes
  • Outsoles: Abrasion, slip and oil resistant rubber outsoles

These Timberland work boots come with PU midsoles and cushioned footbeds that deliver enough shock absorption to remove the stress that standing for many hours on hard surfaces puts on the plantar fascia (which is the ligament that connects the heel to the front of the foot).

Also, they come with shock-diffusion plates that provide constant support for the base of the feet which, over time, hugely reduces the pain generated from plantar fasciitis.

Not everything one looks for in a pair of work boots for plantar fasciitis are fancy comfort features. In fact, sometimes, one gives a lot of value to simple attributes.

In that context, these Timberland boots come with metal top hooks that securely set the laces in one place guaranteeing a snugged fit that impeds the heels from dancing around inside the boots generating unnecessary stress.

In terms of convenience, the boots have breathable antimicrobial linings that avoid odor buildup which is very annoying for the wife and kids!

Protection-wise, these Pitboss work boots have the two pillars all safety boots for plantar fasciitis should have.

First, they come with built-in safety steel toes which allow the worker to work knowing their toes wouldn’t be crushed by heavy falling tools at the construction site.

Secondly, they have rubber abrasion, slip, and oil-resistant outsoles that deliver perfect traction on the slippery surfaces one usually finds at a construction site. Wonder why they are one of the best-selling work boots in the market, huh?

Pros

  • Nubuck leather uppers are flexible, easy-to-clean, and very durable
  • Steel safety toes offer maximum protection
  • Abrasion, slip, and oil resistant outsoles prevent serious injuries
  • Goodyear Welt construction provides extra durability
  • Open PU cushioned footbeds with antimicrobial treatment (to prevent odor buildup)
  • Cambrelle fabric linings let the air flow freely through the boots keeping the feet dry and fresh in hot and humid conditions
  • PU midsoles provide superior shock absorption
  • Nylon shock-diffusion plates allow better support and torsional rigidity

Cons

  • They run a bit too narrow

Features

  • Footbeds: Metatomical, dual-density EVA cushioned footbeds
  • Safety toes: Steel safety toes
  • Outsoles: Non-marking rubber outsoles with oil and slip resistant atributes

Dealing with plantar fasciitis is a hassle, we all know that. That’s why I appreciate work boots that offer solid support features that help in dealing with the consequences of plantar fasciitis.

In that context, these Keen Utility Pittsburgh work boots come with removable metatomical EVA footbeds and compression-molded EVA and PU midsoles that cushion the feet to remove the stress generated by walking for long hours on tough surfaces (one of the leading causes of plantar fasciitis).

These boots have a natural, hiking-inspired design that, during the testing period, provided a nice and comfortable fit. This let my heels and feet stay comfortably locked in one place avoiding unnecessary friction and stress.

Now, speaking about protection, the boots come with oil and slip-resistant non-marking rubber outsoles that offer great traction on all surfaces and with safety steel toes that act as a barrier that protects the toes from any falling object. This gives workers the confidence to work knowing their feet would be protected at all times.

On top of that, the work boots have waterproof breathable membranes which allow workers to keep their feet dry, even when in contact with exterior liquids.

In terms of durability, the boots come manufactured with rugged nubuck leather which is included with the sole objective of being resilient and durable when exposed to harsh external conditions.

Pros

  • Metatomical design delivers substantial shock absorption when the worker stands or walks on hard surfaces
  • Dual-density EVA footbeds with superior cushioning

  • Keen.Dry: a waterproof membrane keeps the feet dry and fresh when exposed to exterior liquids

3. Timberland Pro Rigmaster Waterproof Work Boots for Plantar Fasciitis

Features

  • Footbeds: Ortholite footbeds
  • Safety toes: Steel safety toes
  • Outsoles: Oil and slip resistant, nonmarking PU outsoles with aggressive thread

These Timberland PRO Rigmaster work boots gave me a good impression in terms of support during the testing period.

This happened mainly due to features such as their Ortholite anti-fatigue footbeds and conical PU midsoles that support the base of the feet thanks to their reliable cushioning. This is especially important for workers suffering from plantar fasciitis that spend most of the day on their feet.

Moreover, their breathable mesh lining was included to keep nasty feet odors from building up making the lives of everyone around miserable (which is a very smart idea if you ask me).

In terms of convenience, they have the so-called “finger grip” pulls that let one easily put on and take off the work boots and with padded top collars that make the experience of using the boots much more convenient.  I love those little perks!

Protection is priority number one for workers, even those that suffer from plantar fasciitis.

These Timberland boots come with polyurethane slip and oil-resistant outsoles that provide reliable traction on slippery areas. This gives the worker enough confidence to not worry about slipping, falling, and possibly getting seriously injured.

Additionally, the safety steel toes that meet the ASTM standards give the guarantee that nothing would put the worker’s toes in danger as they acted as metal shields that completely covered such sensitive body parts.

Now, if there’s something that surpassed my expectation is these boots’ durability features. I mean, they come with:

  • Goodyear Welt Cast-Bond construction
  • Ever-guard leather placed in high-wear areas of the boots

These features, in combination, substantially enhance the durability prospects of these Timberland work boots giving the assurance to the worker that their money was well spent on a pair of durable work boots.

Pros

  • Ortholite footbeds offer great cushioning
  • Breathable mesh linings with antimicrobial treatment maintain the feet fresh when exposed to hot and humid conditions
  • Conical PU midsoles deliver excellent feet support when walking on hard surfaces
  • Padded top collars
  • “Fingergrip” pull simplifies the process of putting on and taking off the boots
  • Waterproof membrane keeps the feet dry at all times
  • Safety steel toes provide massive toe protection
  • Nonmarking PU outsoles with slip and oil resistant attributes and aggressive tread patterns provide superior traction on slippery surfaces
  • High-wear areas are re-inforced with Ever-guard leather to improve durability
  • Goodyear Welt Cast-Bond construction achieves superior leather endurance

How Did I Test The Best Work Boots for Plantar Fasciitis?

For those interested, these are the tests I performed as I’ve found them to be the most efficient for finding the best work boots for plantar fasciitis.

Ergonomics Test

For this test, I would be on my feet for 8 to 10 hours straight without taking rests (commonly on hard surfaces such as concrete), replicating many of the conditions that workers have to go through during their workdays.

I did this to see how a given pair of work boots would handle the constant pressure that’s put on the plantar fascia which could worsen the state of their plantar fasciitis.

If the work boots being provided a superior level of shock absorption and feet support, then I’d continue with the protection test.

Protection Test

Given my job as a construction worker, I have to walk on all sorts of surfaces for long periods of time surrounded by both dangerous and heavy machinery, daily. This situation gave me the chance to test various work boots and see whether they had the reliable features to keep me safe from:

  • Slipping, falling on hard surfaces, and getting injured
  • Getting my toes crushed by heavy falling tools

Durability Test

Who wants to waste money on a pair of work boots for plantar fasciitis? Nobody. That’s why every time I would test a pair of work boots for plantar fasciitis I would make sure to feel and stress-test the materials that the boots were built with so I could see whether the boots were going to last for a long time or not.

Must-Have Features of The Best Work Boots for Plantar Fasciitis

Many of you just want to know exactly what to look for in a pair of work boots for plantar fasciitis, so then you could just go ahead and search for the boots yourself. Well, if you’re one of those people, you’re gonna love the following part. feet massage

Contoured & Cushioned Footbeds

Plantar fasciitis is based on the inflamed ligament that goes from the heel to the toes called “plantar fascia” (thus, the name “plantar fasciitis”). To reduce the consequences of this condition, this ligament must be relieved.

One of the best ways to avoid keep straining this ligament is by getting work boots with cushioned and contoured footbeds as these will adopt the natural shape of the arch providing a huge amount of support to it.

This will remove all the stress that the body weight puts on the feet when walking on hard surfaces for long periods of time. As a result, the plantar fascia will reduce its inflammation leading you to feel less pain.

Shock Absorbing Midsoles

One of the main contributing factors to the strain that causes plantar fasciitis is generated when the worker has to stand on tough or bumpy surfaces for many hours every day. This puts tremendous pressure on the feet ligaments commonly leading to suffering from plantar fasciitis.

This is why I recommend getting work boots with proper shock-absorbing footbeds and midsoles.

Both of these features will take on the impact caused by walking on hard surfaces instead of directing it to the feet, leaving them to rest and recover instead of slowly contributing to causing plantar fasciitis.

Flexible Construction

A work boots’ construction is also very important for people suffering from plantar fasciitis.

I mean, if you find a pair of work boots manufactured with a flexible and durable construction method you’ll get the assurance your next boots aren’t only going to last for years but also that they are gonna be substantially comfortable.

In that context, I recommend workers to find work boots with any of the following construction methods:

  • Goodyear Welt construction method
  • Cement construction method
  • Blake construction method

as these are known around the world for being reliable and athletic.

Medium Size, Deep Heels

The way your feet rest inside your work boots is an additional element that could cause or prevent plantar fasciitis.

In my opinion, all work boots for plantar fasciitis should have medium size heel cups as they position the feet just perfectly.

If the heel cups are too tall it could cause unnecessary tension on your feet. On the opposite, if they’re flat, all the strain that comes from walking on hard surfaces would be directed straight into your heels which are a vital part of the plantar fascia (which is the ligament that connects the heel to the toes).

On a secondary note, I’d say it’d be great to get work boots with deep heel cups as they’ll secure the heels and let them rest keeping them safe from receiving unnecessary tension.

Yes, I know, it’s a bit too complex, but trust me, just get medium size deep heel work boots, you’ll thank me for years.

Secure Fit

The best way to bring relief to your plantar fascia is by letting the heels relax in one comfortable and set position. To achieve this, one must get work boots that provide a snug and secure fit to prevent the feet from dancing around inside the boots.

This is why I recommend workers suffering from plantar fasciitis to get work boots with solid laces systems that can provide a tight fit.

The reason behind this recommendation is that quality laces will make sure they stay tied even when the work boots are utilized to walk on rocky surfaces and the sorts (which usually untie work boots).

Easy-To-Break-In

If your work boots are stiff, then every time you take a step your feet will receive additional pressure which will worsen the pain generated by plantar fasciitis.

That’s why I’d recommend workers to get work boots that are easy to break-in.

I mean, it shouldn’t take you more than a week to break a new pair of work boots (two weeks tops). This way, the boots are gonna get flexible very quickly, molding themselves to every muscle of the feet while removing any unnecessary stress that could worsen things.

Pro-tip: If you get a new pair of work boots, make sure to alternate them with an old pair of work boots. Doing this, you’ll make sure the new boots are going to break in without you having to suffer two straight weeks of unbearable pain.

Safety Toes

If you thought the best work boots for plantar fasciitis must-have comfort features exclusively, then you’re mistaken.

Safety attributes are essential for ALL work boots, regardless of the condition their owner might be suffering (i.e. plantar fasciitis). This is how safety toes caps come into play.

Safety toe caps are protective reinforcements placed on the toe area whose main purpose is to provide impact and compression resistance to keep the toes from getting crushed by falling tools.

There’re lots of safety toe caps as part of work boots nowadays, but the most common are:

  • steel toe caps
  • composite toe caps
  • alloy toe caps

Some can be more protective, some light, some cheaper, but most of them are very similar in terms of the protection they offer.

That’s why I recommend workers suffering from plantar fasciitis to consider getting work boots with safety toes as this is a great way to make sure their toes will remain intact, even when working surrounded by heavy machinery.

Oil and Slip Resistant Outsoles

Walking on slippery surfaces is a task most workers must do daily, regardless of their experience and background. There’s no way around it.

That’s why I recommend all workers with plantar fasciitis do not only look for comfort features but also look for boots with oil and slip-resistant outsoles.

That way, they’ll be able to work consistently without worrying about slipping on a floor that has oil on it.

Good Quality Materials & Reliable Construction Methods

Since not long ago, brands made it a priority to manufacture boots with cheaper and cheaper materials as time went on with the sole purpose of boosting their profits.

That’s how we got low-quality yet very expensive work boots made overseas that don’t last more than a few months of demanding use.

Getting work boots manufactured with good quality materials (i.e. full-grain leather) which have reliable construction methods (i.e. Goodyear Welt Construction) is the best recommendation I can give.

By doing this, one can enjoy some level of “protection” against spending hundreds of dollars on work boots that break apart before being getting to the one-year mark.

Benefits of Choosing The Best Work Boots For Plantar Fasciitis

There are clear benefits that come from getting the best work boots for plantar fasciitis, let me talk a bit about them. workers analyzing plan

Luckily, and with enough time, this will give the ligament that connects the heel with the front of the foot (a.k.a. the plantar fascia) enough time to rest and recover.

If there’s something wrong with working walking all day on hard surfaces is that it puts tremendous pressure on your feet’ ligaments.

This gets substantially worse if you’re already suffering from plantar fasciitis, right?

Well, the good news is that if you get the right boots for plantar fasciitis, these will surely have enough shock-absorbing features to help you deal with this while letting you work as many hours as you’d like! Really cool, huh?

Avoid Expensive Surgeries

If you don’t treat plantar fasciitis by consulting with your doctor and getting a good pair of work boots, there’s a good chance that there won’t be any treatments that will help you reverse the consequences of this awful condition.

However, if you are successful in treating plantar fasciitis, there’s a solid chance you’ll be able to avoid having to get expensive surgery to treat this terrible.

So, by getting the best work boots for plantar fasciitis AND consulting with a professional, you’ll be able to successfully fight the pains generated by plantar fasciitis and save money at the same time!

Frequently Asked Questions

This is my attempt to answer the most frequent questions asked about the best work boots for plantar fasciitis.

What Is Plantar Fasciitis?

When we say ‘plantar’ we’re talking about the bottom of the foot, the one that rests in its entirety on the work boot’s footbed.

On the other hand, when we say ‘fascia’ we’re talking about an important ligament that runs from toes to heels, going across the length of the foot, which its primary function is supporting the foot arch.

Now, when say plantar fasciitis we’re talking about the condition in which that ligament (the fascia) is painfully inflamed while being susceptible to small little tears that could develop in more complex and even more painful injuries.

What are the Symptoms of Plantar Fasciitis?

Considering the ‘fascia’ (the ligament that runs from toes to heels, going across the length of the foot) is surrounded by various muscles and nerves when it happens to be inflamed (plantar fasciitis), the resulting pain is almost paralyzing.

I mean, you feel like the tendon is just about to rip off. It’s awful. This pain could come in different forms:

  • Stabbing heel or foot pain
  • Trouble standing for long periods of time due to the pain

Regarding how the pain levels develop, I’d say the pain can be very deep in the morning and fade away as the day passes or it could be just fine in the morning and worsen as the day goes on. Nevertheless, what I can guarantee you is that the pain is going to be awful.

How One Gets Plantar Fasciitis?

Several ways lead to this terrible condition. The following are some of the most frequent ones:

  • High arches or flat feet: Both these conditions put extra pressure on the arch and tendons. Over time, this strain might lead to developing plantar fasciitis
  • Walking for long periods of time on hard surfaces: This puts added pressure on the feet ligaments which aren’t able to deal with this for many hours (especially with no breaks). As a result, the ligaments get inflamed, thus, developing plantar fasciitis
  • Being overweight: I don’t like to talk about someone else’s body. I mean, I have a few pounds extra myself! But the truth is that extra weight puts extra pressure on the plantar fascia every time one walks or stands
  • Wearing the wrong footwear: If one chooses the wrong footwear there’s gonna be an absence of important ergonomic features for the feet. This could put extra strain on the base of the feet leading to plantar fasciitis

How To Get Rid of Plantar Fasciitis?

Disclaimer: Please consult a doctor to treat your physical problems. This article was written to share my experience with plantar fasciitis and is not intended to be medical advice.

For those interested to read about how I got rid of my plantar fasciitis, this is the process I followed.

Wear The Right Pair Of Work Boots

Whatever you choose to use as footwear is gonna decide how you deal with plantar fasciitis.

I mean, if you choose a cheap pair of work boots your life is gonna be hell, you’ll feel the worst pain you’ve ever felt in your feet and things are gonna go downhill in your job. Your head is gonna be constantly focused on the pain and your concentration is gonna be awful.

On the other hand, if you get a proper pair of work boots then your life is gonna be completely different. Your feet will receive the support they need so your fascia gets the rest it needs to properly recover from this awful condition. You won’t dread the moment you have to stand up and go to work anymore!

Stretching The Achilles Tendon

The Achilles tendon or heel cord has the vital responsibility of connecting the calf muscles to the heel bone. Due to this, a great way to relax the plantar fascia is to stretch this tendon, as more blood will flow to this part of the feet which will help in stimulating the zone.

Applying Ice Packs

Bringing cold to an afflicted zone is the best way to reduce inflammation as the cold reduces the blood flow which is the main cause that’s generating the inflammation.

That’s why one of the best ways to non-intrusively reduce the pain that plantar fasciitis generates is by applying ice packs to your heels and plantar for at least 20 minutes straight.

Lose A Few Pounds

One of the best ways to relieve the plantar fascia (the ligament that connects the heel with the front part of the foot) is by reducing the weight the heel carries. This gets even more relevant if you’re overweight.

Wanna know if you should lose a few pounds?

Put your measurements in this calculator and it’ll tell you if you’re overweight and how much weight you should lose if you are! Following a diet, making some exercise, and losing a few pounds is key to bringing some relief to the heel.

Consulting a dietician is your best bet if you think you should drop a few pounds.

What If the Pain Stays?

Well… if the pain continues you must do what you should have done from the beginning, just go to the doctor. There is no human being on the planet that’s gonna tell you what you actually should do to solve this problem other than a doctor.

Surgery… An Option?

There are some people that after following all the previous tips, even after consulting a doctor, still have paralyzing pain due to plantar fasciitis and have to recur to surgery.

This is not the best-case scenario as these procedures are expensive, painful, and take a lot of time to recover.

But sadly, they are the only option for some people. Hopefully, that’s not your case and you can get some value out of this article!

What are Heel Spurs?

There’s this thing called ”Heel Spur Syndrome”.

So, what are heel spurs?

They are calcium deposits located in the underside of the heel caused by walking for long periods of time on hard surfaces while wearing tough work boots.

They generate discomfort and a mild level of pain in the heel, which in combination with the pains brought by plantar fasciitis can make a killer combination.

Pro Tip: Add Orthotic Inserts

Many workers don’t know about the miracle works of a great pair of orthotics.

For those out of the loop, orthotics are insoles one can get to be placed into the bottom of the work boots. They aim to provide solid cushioning and support to the base of the feet.

As a result of the added support, the resulting feet pain of plantar fasciitis is substantially reduced (in the best case scenario).

In my opinion, the best orthotics for plantar fasciitis are the famous ”Ortholite footbeds”. Ortholite is a stamp of ergonomics and support among insoles as it uses the ”Open Cell Foam” that molds to all types of feet, bringing a refreshing sensation of constant cushioning.

Last but not least, I believe the best orthotics out there for plantar fasciitis are the Timberland PRO Anti-Fatigue Technology Replacement Insoles. They come with a dynamic arch design that cradles the feet’ plantar providing maximum comfort and substantially reducing pain.
