Must Have Features of the Best Work Shoes for Supination

There are certain features I believe all work shoes must have to be perfect for workers that suffer from supination.

Let’s talk about the most important ones…

Shock Absorbing Midsoles

Get a pair of work shoes with sturdy midsoles that will absorb the shocks caused by walking all day on hard surfaces (i.e., concrete).

You’ll save your feet and knees from having to deal with the stress of those shocks, allowing them to rest and recover even if you’re on your feet all day.

If you asked me, I believe PU midsoles are the best, as those are the ones most of my work boots have.

Cushioned Footbeds

At all times, a work shoe should be comfy. Otherwise, how will you deal with the negative consequences of supination?

To accomplish this, your work shoes must be made with fully padded footbeds that support the base of your feet. This is especially important when walking on rocky terrains.

There are a lot of footbeds in the market. However, my personal favorite are Ortholite footbeds. You can even buy them separately and add them to your next pair of work boots.

YouTube video

Slip Resistant Outsoles

If you haven’t encountered slippery and uneven surfaces at work, you might not be a tradesman at all. I mean, if you’re a construction worker or even an ironworker, you’re 100% dealing with tricky surfaces on a day-to-day basis.

In that context, I feel the ideal work shoes for supination must include vital protective characteristics such as slip-resistant outsoles that tightly grip these surfaces, providing you with the best traction possible.

As a result, you’ll be avoiding nasty injuries that seem to be very frequent in the construction industry.

Safety Toe Caps

We are all aware that work sites are filled with tools and machine parts that could fall at any time and injure your toes.

This is why I am a firm believer in purchasing work shoes with safety toe caps since this is the most effective method to avoid having to deal with an amputated toe.

What is the best type of safety toe cap?

That depends on your requirements, tastes, and financial constraints.

Steel toe caps are extremely safe and inexpensive, but they add significant bulk to the shoes.

Composite safety toe caps are lighter and nonmetallic than steel toe caps, but they are not as robust.

Finally, while alloy safety toe caps are as safe as steel toe caps and as light as composite safety toe caps, they are challenging to find and quite expensive.

It can be difficult to choose, but there is one thing you should keep in mind: the best work shoe for supination must feature a safety toe cap.

YouTube video

Waterproofing/Insulation

Nothing is more inconvenient than not having insulation when exposed to winter temperatures and feeling your feet get wet when it rains while working outside.

This is why I always recommend getting work shoes with adequate insulation and waterproofing, as both features will keep your feet dry and warm while exposed to these conditions.

When it comes to insulation, Thinsulate insulation is the best choice, in my opinion, as it has the backing of 3M, which is a company that has quality and durability as its main priorities.

Top Quality Materials

The best way to guarantee that your investment in the best work shoe for supination lasts for at least a few years is to ensure that they are made with high-quality materials and good construction methods.

That is why I usually search for work shoes manufactured by respected brands (such as Timberland, Wolverine, Irish Setter, and so on) that use materials such as full-grain leather or Vibram outsoles and reliable construction methods (i.e., Goodyear Welt, Cement Heel construction, etc.).

That way, you can be confident that your hard-earned money is being spent on boots that will withstand any demanding use.

Frequently Asked Questions

There are certain questions that always come up regarding the best work shoes for supination. This is my subsequent attempt at answering most of them.

What is the best work shoe for supination good for?

Supination, as previously said, is a condition in which your entire body weight is placed on the outer area of your foot, resulting in terrible foot and knee pain.

The best work shoe for supination have attributes that deal with the consequences of this condition, thus, featuring:

  • Shock-absorbing midsoles that relieve stress on your knees and feet after walking all day on hard surfaces.
  • Cushioned footbeds responsible for providing the feet with the support needed

What safety toe caps are best for a work shoe for supination?

This will depend on your budget and personal needs, as there are numerous options for safety toe caps.

Regardless, I’ll give you a quick rundown of the various options so you can make an informed decision:

  • Steel toe caps are the most common option among work shoe manufacturers. These steel toe caps are extremely durable and protective, but they add bulk and weight to the shoes overall.
  • Composite toe caps are nonmetallic, which is ideal for avoiding electrocution. They are less heavy than steel toe caps, but they are not as protective.
  • Alloy toe caps are as hard as steel toe caps and as light as composite safety toe caps, making them the ideal alternative for workers who want maximum protection without adding bulk to their boots. However, they are difficult to find in work shoes and fairly pricey.
  • Carbon toe caps are far more difficult to come by and much more expensive. Despite this, they are by far the most protective and lightweight of all.

What happens if I wear regular shoes instead of supination ones?

The thing with supination is that it’s a long-term condition.

In my situation, for example, after years of supinating, I began to have excruciating foot and knee pains that were difficult to tolerate. I couldn’t even walk. That’s when I went to see a doctor, who helped me in overcoming this disease.

So, to address the issue, probably nothing will happen in the short term if you wear a regular shoe while supinating because the consequences of supination do not manifest themselves immediately.

However, because normal shoes lack suitably cushioned footbeds and stress-absorbing midsoles, you will begin to experience foot, knee, and back pain after a few months. Then it’s all downhill from there!

YouTube video

Are loose work shoes best for supination?

To be honest, it doesn’t make much of a difference.

I mean, I understand the confusion. But the truth is that whether you wear tight or loose work shoes makes no difference in how much you supinate.

What it will make a difference is consulting with a doctor and getting a proper work shoe for supination made with features such as cushioned footbeds and shock absorbing midsoles.

Do Supinators need stable shoes?

This is a difficult question to answer.

Most heavy supinators have foot stability issues since the majority of their bodyweight is placed on the outer part of the feet. This, of course, requires the use of a stability work shoe.

Light supinators who have not yet developed stability problems may not require a stability work shoe.

The only way to answer these issues is to consult with a specialist and completely adhere to their recommendations.
